A Microsoft Word add-in that cites studies from your Evidence reviews and keeps the document's reference list in sync with the citations.
What it does
Browse your projects, reviews and studies, filtered by screening state (included, excluded, unscreened, …).
Insert in-text citations at the cursor. One citation can cite studies from several reviews.
Maintain a "References" list at the end of the document. Deleting a citation removes the entries no longer cited and renumbers the rest.
Format citations and references with the citation styles (CSL) set up in your Evidence workspace. Switching style re-renders the whole document.
Jump from a citation to its reference entry with Ctrl+click.
Getting access
The add-in is free to install, but it needs an Evidence account: it reads references from your organization's Evidence workspace. To get an account, see pricing, book a demo, or write to info@evidence.systems. If your organization already uses Evidence, ask your administrator for an account.
Setup
In Word, open Home → Add-ins (or Insert → Get Add-ins), search for "Evidence Reference Manager" and add it.
Click References in the Evidence group on the Home tab.
Enter your Evidence address, the URL you use to open Evidence in the browser (for example https://acme.evidence.systems), and click Next.
Sign in with your Evidence account in the window that opens. If you are already signed in to Evidence in your browser, the window closes on its own.
Supported: Word on the web, Word for Windows and Mac (Microsoft 365, 2019 or later) and Word on iPad.
Troubleshooting
"Could not reach Evidence at this address"
Check the address against the one in your browser's address bar when you use Evidence. Enter only the start of it, for example https://acme.evidence.systems.
The sign-in window does not open
Your browser may be blocking pop-ups for Word on the web. Allow pop-ups for office.com and try again.
I need to switch to another Evidence workspace
Click Sign out in the add-in, then change next to "Connected to …" on the sign-in screen, and enter the new address.
Your data
The add-in reads projects, reviews, studies and citation styles from your Evidence workspace. It does not send your document's content to Evidence or anywhere else. Citations and references are stored in the document itself. The add-in keeps your Evidence address and a sign-in token in your Office settings; signing out removes the token.
